Pat Cummins has demonstrated to Cricket Australia one of their most crucial balancing acts in guiding a young player, and the Test skipper is now in the front row to witness another as Cameron Green’s ascent into the upper echelons of the world’s best continues.

Last week’s quick trip to India for three Twenty20 Internationals may turn out to be one of the most important in Green’s career as he cemented his reputation as an opening hitter, which has likely put astronomical numbers next to his name for the IPL.

Green’s early career was carefully controlled because of his history of back ailments, but now he is hitting a crucial stage as a three-format player just as Australia has tons of significant series and tournaments on the horizon and franchises are likely to start calling.

Green’s upcoming international schedule is jam-packed even though he isn’t, at least not yet, a member of Australia’s T20 World Cup team. It includes five home Test matches against the West Indies and South Africa, four tests abroad, the Ashes in England (along with a possible World Test Championship final), and the ODI World Cup this time next year before another home summer.

Other bilateral white-ball agreements, as well as domestic cricket for Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers—Green just signed for the latter—are not included in that list.

Green’s bowling workload is still being monitored – he was eased back into bowling on the Sri Lanka tour after a break and was recently rested against New Zealand due to tightness – and while he is now largely unconstrained in Tests, Pat Cummins stated it is something that is always on his mind.

“Now he’s in and around three formats it becomes even more important. He is someone who loves playing, even when he goes back to WA we have to manage that as well. There are 15 Tests in the next few months plus a World Cup, lots of cricket.”

“And then there’s the call on his services from other teams. “You can’t blame anyone for going in the IPL,” Pat Cummins said.

“He’s going to have huge demand on him wherever he plays. Decisions will be made, there’s a lot of cricket around,” Pat Cummins Added.

Next week, the Australian T20 team will reunite to start their final run-up to the World Cup with two matches against the West Indies on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, followed by three matches against England in Perth and Canberra.
