The Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) media rights will go up for auction on Monday, and all the major Indian broadcasters, including Disney Star*, Viacom 18, Sony, and Zee, will be participating. For the all-day event, the BCCI has chosen a closed bid auction technique and will declare the winner that same day.

ESPNcricinfo has discovered that eight prospective bidders purchased the bidding paperwork that was made available for purchase in December.  The rights were divided into three categories: linear (TV), digital, and combination (TV and digital), and they covered a five-year period from 2023 to 2027. There will be a global sale of the rights, including in India.

Market To Decide WIPL’s Worth

The BCCI has also chosen not to establish a basic price because it wants the market to decide the WIPL’s worth since it is an uncharted area. Contrast this with the method it used to sell the broadcast rights for the men’s IPL last year for a record net amount of about US$ 6 billion. These rights were divided among many categories and geographical areas, and they were vigorously disputed by numerous participants throughout the three-day auction procedure.

Because they comprise the majority of the central commercial pool, from which the five franchisees will get 80% of their income, the WIPL media rights are crucial.

The BCCI said that it will split with the teams 80% of the commercial rights money it receives from the WIPL in the first five years, 60% in the next five years, and 50% beyond that in the bidding document for franchise rights. Additionally, 80% of the revenue generated by the central licencing rights will go to the franchisees.

The Women’s T20 Challenge was first held as an exhibition tournament, but the BCCI last year eventually made the decision to introduce the WIPL, with the first season’s opening match scheduled for March. The BCCI has not officially released the tournament’s schedule, but it is widely believed that the inaugural season, which would consist of 22 matches, will take place between March 5 and March 23.

On January 25, the five WIPL franchises will be unveiled by the BCCI. On that day, the franchisees’ financial bids, which are presently being presented in sealed envelopes, will be unlocked. The proposal paper includes a list of 10 cities from the BCCI. As of now, at least eight of the ten men’s IPL franchises have said they would participate in the franchise bidding process.
