Former Indian selector Sarandeep Singh has heaped high praise on Rishabh Pant for the manner in which he has improved his shot-selection and wicketkeeping skills to become India’s first-choice keeper, especially in Test cricket.

The recently-concluded International season proved to be Rishabh Pant’s moment of truth as the 23-year-old finally laid to rest the debate as to who should be India’s 1st-choice keeper between him and Wriddhiman Saha.

Pant was dropped from the playing 11 as India opted to go with the experience of Saha in the Adelaide pink ball Test against Australia.

However, the southpaw was reinstated back in the team following India’s shambolic defeat for the Boxing Day Test and the 23-year-old has not looked back since then.

Rishabh Pant proceeded to play three game-changing innings in Sydney, Brisbane, and Ahmedabad during the course of the next 7 Tests to become one of India’s MVP in the longest format.

Pant also translated his Test heroics in 50-over cricket as he belted consecutive 70+ scores against England.

However, Sarandeep Singh reckoned that KL Rahul should continue keeping wickets in ODI cricket.

“No praise will be enough for Pant. He had some fitness issues, worked on that and worked on his shot selection. If you expect a 21-year-old to play like a 30-year-old, it is tough to start with. You see Hardik (Pandya), the way he bats now with experience, same thing has been seen in Pant now in the last six months or so,” said Sarandeep Singh to PTI.

”He was out of the team which was good for him. There is a right time and right ball to hit. The way he played in Australia, it shows he has gained a lot of experience. He is picking and choosing,” he added.

“He can give you 10 years in Test cricket, Saha cannot and has become the number one choice. In ODIs, Shreyas got injured so Rishabh played. When he is back, KL should be the wicketkeeper because he has been keeping wickets for a long time and is doing a fine job.” he said.
