Sisanda Magala and Marco Jansen, two all-rounders, have been called back by South Africa for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England at home. Despite a recent slump in white ball cricket and a team that seems to be a familiar one, Temba Bavuma has kept his position as South Africa’s ODI captain.

Dewald Brevis, a hard-hitting 19-year-old who is presently third on the list of SA20 run scorers, could not join the team due to space constraints.

Earlier this week, South Africa’s director of cricket, Enoch Nkwe, said Brevis would likely have a David Warner-like introduction to international cricket by progressing from the T20I squad upwards, and selection organiser Victor Mpitsang confirmed he would be considered for the series against the West Indies in March.

Brevis and Sisanda Magala were playing in the SA20 match at the time of the squad announcement, with the latter taking six wickets from the former. At the SA20, Sisanda Magala is tied for third in terms of wickets taken, and this season’s domestic one-day cup saw him take the most.

Despite his form, Magala struggled to pass CSA’s two-kilometer time trial in the fitness test, and he was largely excluded from the competition last year. He’s reached the 8:30 mark and is now qualified for selection.

South Africa will attempt to move past its appalling recent results, which included failure to perform at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and a 0-3 defeat in the Test series Down Under.

“The selection panel is particularly excited by the depth of this squad, with a mix of youth and experience. We are confident that this group of players will take us one step closer to qualifying for the ICC Men’s World Cup in India later this year,” Convener of Selectors Victor Mpitsang said.

“We are also pleased with the inclusion of Sisanda Magala and the commitment he has shown to meet the fitness standards required for national selection. The three-match series against England will kickstart our international home season following months on the road, and we would like to wish Temba and Shukri well in what will no doubt be an exciting series against quality opposition,” Victor Mpitsang added.

The series begins on January 27 in Bloemfontein and concludes five days later in Kimberley. The teams last played in a three-game series in England last July, which ended 1-1 due to rain in the third game in Leeds.

South Africa squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, Rassie van der Dussen, Keshav Maharaj, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Sisanda Magala, Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi.
