Cricket South Africa decided to announce Aiden Markram as the next T20I skipper for South Africa as Temba Bavuma was handed over the Test and ODI captaincy. In the process, they overlooked a far more experienced David Miller who according to many would have been a better choice for T20I captaincy.
South Africa are currently playing an ODI series against West Indies with qualification points for the World Cup up for grabs. The Proteas are currently placed ninth with West Indies and Sri Lanka placed above and below them respectively. The WIndies are currently leading the three-match series by winning the second ODI after the first was washed out due to rain.

Would Be Lying If I Said I Wasn’t Interested: David Miller On T20I Captaincy
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested. I’ve really enjoyed the journey I’ve had with the Proteas and the experience that I’ve got. The fact that I am not captain, I am most certainly not bitter or anything towards anyone. I want to put my best foot forward for the team and support Aiden in that role” Miller said, ahead of the second ODI against West Indies.

Miller has sufficient leadership experience having led Barbados Royals, Paarl Royals and Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings) in franchise tournaments. He has also led the national team in T20Is against Pakistan, England and Ireland. He has now opined about Markram as the next captain saying that he will be always there for support.
Extremely Great Leader: David Miller On Aiden Markram
“He is an extremely great leader and he has got a lot of maturity and a calmness about him,” Miller said of Markram. “And that just moves throughout the change room. It’s a great option and with Rob (Walter) coming in as the new (white-ball) coach, they are going to form a great combination. I am there to support the guys in whatever they need from me” the southpaw further said.
David Miller concluded by saying that he now wants to prepare the next generation of Protean cricketers and will always be eager to help out the new bunch of players. He will be playing the ODI series against the Netherlands before joining Gujarat Giants for IPL 2023.
“I just want to make the impact that I can on and off the field; for the new guys in the squad to feed off my experience and learning. I am always learning myself; learning from them as well. The young guys have some different thought processes when they bat and bowl, so for me, it’s just to boost the guys on the field, recognise moments in the game that I have seen more often than they have, keep that communication throughout the game and keep the guys nice and calm” Miller concluded saying.
