Reeza Hendricks, South Africa’s opening batsman, confirmed that Kagiso Rabada stated exactly that on March 26, 2023, following South Africa’s 258-run defeat to West Indies in the second T20I. Hendricks, one of the masterminds behind South Africa’s victory, said that the record-breaking run they went on to complete “would say is similar to the 438 games.”

In the infamous “438” match at the Wanderers 17 years ago, Jacques Kallis’ comment that the bowlers had done their duties and that the Australians were “10-15 runs short” had significantly calmed down a furious team after their ball-tapping.

At the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday, South Africa defeated West Indies by chasing down 259 thanks to a counterattacking century from Quinton de Kock. While South Africa completed the most successful chase by a side in the history of the format, De Kock scored 100 runs off just 44 deliveries.

Earlier on Sunday at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, West Indies amassed a total of 258/5 against South Africa, with Jonathan Charles registering the joint third-fastest century in T20I history. Charles outperformed Chris Gayle to become the West Indies’ quickest centurion in the game’s shortest format, slamming 118 off just 46 balls while slamming 11 sixes and 10 fours.

“We never doubted ourselves at any stage” – Reeza Hendricks

The Proteas of 2023 heard a throwback to a 2006 chirp after giving up 258 in their 20 overs and were “quietly optimistic” of starting Sunday’s amazing world record T20 chase against the West Indies here in Centurion.

It would have been totally reasonable for observers to have made assumptions about the home team’s mental state after leaving the field after giving it their best in a game they needed to win in order to tie the three-match series. It likely explains why Kagiso Rabada made sure to cover all of his moral bases.

“Funnily enough, KG said they’re 10 runs short when we went off the field, which probably is similar to what Jacques did for the team,” said Reeza Hendricks in a Post-match presentation.

“We managed to get over the line and play this incredible game.” But it comes across as debatable whether much attention was given to his pity brand of motivation,” Reeza Hendricks said.

“The chat was quite simple, Everybody was quietly confident that this was a good wicket. We never doubted ourselves at any stage. We believed we had the batting order to chase the score down,” Reeza Hendricks added.

The series is levelled now and the two teams will play a decider on Tuesday, 28th of March.
