Indian cricket may be approaching another transitional moment with so many bright young players knocking on the door. The next generation of Indian cricketers is poised to take the field with veterans like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara in their mid-30s and experiencing a slight form slump.

As seen in ODIs and T20Is, more and more young players are earning India caps, but there is one young player making waves on the domestic scene who the legendary Sunil Gavaskar has supported to make his India debut soon.

The 24-year-old Sarfaraz Khan is in the best shape of his life. The Mumbai-born kid, who just completed a very successful Ranji Trophy season, has scored a ton of runs. Sarfaraz was Mumbai’s standout performer on the way to the Ranji Trophy final, hitting a mind-blowing 982 runs from six matches at an incredible average of 122.75, including four hundreds and two fifties.

It Would Be A Surprise If Sarfaraz Khan Is Not Selected For The Next Test Series: Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar stated that it would be a genuine surprise if the 24-year-old is not selected for India’s next Test series after the Edgbaston Test, which has increased the clamour for Sarfaraz’s inclusion in the Test squad.

“Sarfaraz Khan’s tremendous run of hundreds should bring him into contention for a place in the national team where with Rahane gone and Pujara getting one last chance to score and keep his place in the team and go on to play a century of Test matches the door could open for Sarfaraz.

“He certainly has banged the selection committee’s door down and it would be a real surprise if his name doesn’t figure in the squad for the next Test series,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

“There are some others too like Rajat Patidar who has also been tremendously consistent in what has been a breakthrough season for him. India are blessed to have such talent which is keeping the seniors on their toes and ensuring there is no room for complacency at all,” added the former India captain.

Only time will tell if Khan earns a call-up to the Indian team or not.
