Australian opener David Warner stressed the surge in cricket matches at both the international and franchise levels. The former Australia T20I skipper called the anticipated change in the game very scary.

Since the advent of the Indian Premier League in 2008 by the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI), every big nation has got its own T20 league or in the process of establishing one.

The expansion of T20 leagues

Cricket Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) and Pakistan Cricket Board’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) are the mere competitors of IPL with the ECB-owned ‘The Hundred’ latest to join the brigade.

South Africa and the United Arab Emirates are the two countries in line to launch their respective T20 competitions next year in January. The fact that IPL owners have invested in teams of both leagues is likely to boost their revenue models.

It’s very difficult at this level to compete in 80-90 games in a year: David Warner

Warner recently signed a two-year deal with Sydney Thunder to play in the BBL. This comes after the star Australian player was in talks of playing for a franchise in the ILT20 League in UAE. Cricket Australia (CA) was reportedly said to offer a lucrative deal to get his services in Australia’s T20 league.

The Australian batter, 35, said he is fortunate to be in the last few years of international cricket.

Warner is a regular overseas player in the Indian Premier League with his last stint being with Delhi Capitals this year.

The schedule looking for the next five years is scary. I am glad that I am at the back end because it’s very very difficult. I am obviously with the family; a lot of guys have young families as well. That’s going to be difficult… It’s very difficult at this level to try and compete (in) 80-90 games a year… That’s a lot of cricket,” Warner told reporters.

Warner is part of Australia’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Zimbabwe, starting on August 28 in Townsville.
