Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has urged for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to be completely self-governing, with no influence from the government.

With the change in leadership and prime minister, Afridi’s views come at a time when the position of the current chairman Ramiz Raja is questionable.

In Pakistan cricket, the Prime Minister is automatically designated Patron in Chief of the PCB, and he or she nominates two candidates for the chairmanship, one of whom is elected by the general body.

Speculations abound that he would be replaced by someone chosen by new Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

“The PCB, in my opinion, should be independent of the government.” The government should not be in charge of appointing the board’s chairman and CEO. “The PCB must be completely self-contained, with its internal election system and no interference from government officials,” Afridi said at a reception.

Departments have a big role to play in Pakistan domestic cricket: Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi said The approach must end since this never permitted any structure to settle down successfully. Every time something new chairman took over, he carried his method with him.

“This is why Pakistan cricket is having difficulties.” Departments, I believe, have a significant role to play in domestic cricket in Pakistan, but if the board has introduced a new system, it should be given adequate time to be tried presently,” Afridi added.

Last September, Raza was chosen as head of the PCB on the recommendation of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Raza and Khan were members of the Pakistan side that won the 1992 ODI World Cup after defeating England in the final.

“One of my main goals will be to help instill the same culture, mindset, attitude, and approach in the Pakistan men’s cricket squad that previously made Pakistan one of the most feared cricketing nations,” Raja said after his appointment.

Shahid Afridi’s views come at a time when the position of the current chairman Ramiz Raja is questionable.
