Contrary to popular beliefs, the Indian team made a disastrous start on day three of the first Test against Australia in Adelaide. Australia skittled the tourists for 36 and not only recorded their lowest Test total but bagged another unwanted feat. India became the first team in the 21st century to get bowled out in the Test without any of the batsman scoring in double-figures.

The last team to do was South Africa against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham way back in 1924. In that particular game, the Proteas managed only 30 runs, lasting 12.3 overs with their highest score being 7 made by Herbie Taylor. As far as India is concerned, their lowest total before the one in Adelaide was 42, recorded against England at the Lord’s in 1974.

India entered the third day of the first Test against Australia in Adelaide with their neck forward. Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah combined to take six wickets between them to bowl out Australia for 191 after putting 244 on the board in their first innings. They secured a priceless 53-run led and had to bat for the best part of day three to push for a victory that could have given them the series lead.

Three of India’s batsmen went for a duck:

While none of the visitors’ batsmen reached double figures, the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, and Ravichandran Ashwin went for ducks. Virat Kohli, who was playing his last innings of 2020 and was the top-scorer in the first innings, perished for four runs.

Australia required only three bowlers to make it count as Josh Hazlewood proved to the pick of them, taking five wickets and Pat Cummins snapping four. Fast bowler Mohammad Shami copped a blow on his wrist as he was unable to bat which also makes India one bowler short while defending 90 runs.
