Veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh opined that Shreyas Iyer is ready to take Ajinkya Rahane’s slot in the middle-order after his record-breaking performances on his Test debut against New Zealand.

In Kanpur, Iyer became the first Indian to hit a century and fifty on Test debut, when he helped India out of a jam in both innings. While the Kiwis managed to draw the Kanpur Test, courtesy of their valiant efforts from their batters, Iyer bagged the Player of the Match award for his excellent show with the bat on a slow and low pitch.

Harbhajan Singh lauded the 26-year-old for his brilliant knocks.

“Shreyas Iyer batted brilliantly in the last game and showed his talent. And I am so happy that he made the most of the opportunity in the middle order, Harbhajan Singh said in his YouTube video.

Ajinkya Rahane, who led the side in Kanpur, registered scores of 35 and 4 and his place in the eleven has come under question.

Virat Kohli returned for the Mumbai Test while Rahane missed out due to injury. However, there was a chance that he could have even been dropped considering his struggles of late.

Harbhajan Singh stated that in Iyer India have found a “perfect solution” to replace Rahane, the Test vice-captain.

“Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane is not scoring runs. Going forward, Iyer could be India’s perfect solution. Don’t know if Rahane will be a part of the India squad for the South Africa series but Iyer, I feel, has made his case as a middle-order option. It will be interesting when the selection happens,” the off-spinner added.

The BCCI has confirmed that India will tour South Africa, but it will be a delayed tour, comprising of the Test and ODI series, and the T20I series will be played later.
