On Tuesday, February 7, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced nominees for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for January 2023. India’s Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj were among the three players nominated for the award.

The 28-year-old right-arm seamer Siraj took the responsibility to lead India’s pace attack in ODIs in the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. He performed brilliantly for the side in the home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, especially with the new ball.

Siraj’s match-winning performances and his bowling brilliance in ODIs also helped him become the No.1 ranked bowler in the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings. He was crowned the No.1 ODI bowler in January 2023.

In the ODI series against Sri Lanka, Mohammed Siraj returned with the figures of 2/30 from seven overs in the first ODI in Guwahati. He followed it up with 3/30 and 4/32 in his next two outings. The pacer also finished as the leading wicket-taker in the series.

In the New Zealand series, Siraj had the figures of 4/46 at his home ground in Hyderabad and then in the second game, he had figures of 6-1-10-1 in Raipur.

Shubman Gill Dominated In January

The 23-year-old opening batsman Gill looked at his absolute best in January and he dominated the opposition teams in white-ball cricket.

In the Sri Lanka ODI series, Shubman Gill smashed brilliant 70, 21, and 116. In the next ODI series against New Zealand, he batted even more brilliantly. The 23-year-old registered a remarkable double century in the first match and then backed it up with 40* and 112 in his next two outings. He smashed 360 runs in the series to equal Babar Azam’s record for most runs by anyone in a three-match ODI series.

Gill also performed exceptionally well in the T20I series decider against the BlackCaps, smashing 126* off 63 in the third T20I to help India seal the series.

The senior New Zealand opener Devon Conway is the third player nominated for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for January 2023. He had a good start to the year, smashing three tons and two fifties across formats in January.
