Sri Lanka and Afghanistan go head to head in the first of the three-match ODI series on June 2, 2023. The match starts from 10 am IST and will be played in Hambantota. The SL vs AFG consists of three ODIs to be played between June2-7. All the matches will be played in Hambantota.
Afghanistan qualified for the ODI World Cup earlier this year. They finished among the top 8 teams are secured a qualification. On the other hand, Sri Lanka failed to ensure a direct qualification. The remaining teams will have to play in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier along with five Associate teams. Two teams from the qualifying tournament will then progress to the World Cup. India have automatically qualified on the account of being the tournament hosts.

Heading into this match, Sri Lanka are placed ninth in the ICC ODI rankings while Afghanistan eighth. Both teams played an ODI series in November 2022 and are back playing against each other again. The previous series ended 1-1 with Afghanistan winning the first ODI by 60 runs and Sri Lanka winning the third ODI by four wickets.
Both teams also met in the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup last year. Sri Lanka managed to beat Afghanistan on both occasions. Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup in the group stage but lost out in the Super 4 stage. They also defeated Bangladesh in the group stage. However, losses to Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India saw them get eliminated from the tournament. They did not have a T20 World Cup campaign to remember as they lost all their league games to bow out from the tournament.

Hasmatullah Shahidi will lead the side in the ODI series as Mohammad Nabi stepped down as captain of the side post the T20 World Cup. Dasun Shanaka will lead the Sri Lankan team in the ODI series. The Asia Cup win last year remains his biggest achievement as Sri Lankan captain. Rashid Khan is out of the first two games with a lower back injury. He is expected to return for the final ODI on June 7.
