Sri Lanka and Afghanistan go head to head in the second of the three ODIs on November 27, Sunday. All the matches will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele. Afghanistan notched up their second ODI win against Sri Lanka.
The Afghanistan National Team have arrived in style for the ODI series which is a part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League 2023. The Afghan side reached Sri Lanka on November 22 as per reports.
The first ODI win was a memorable one for Afghanistan. It showed the depth and talent that the side possesses. Ibrahim Zadran notched up his second ODI ton to take his team to a competitive total. The bowlers then stepped up and delivered for the team. Fazalhaq Farooqi took four wickets, Gulbadin Naib three, and Rashid Khan one.
Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup earlier this year by defeating Pakistan in the final. They lost against Afghanistan to begin their campaign and ended up winning the title. However, they could not replicate their Asia Cup form in the World Cup.
They qualified for their Super 12 round but could not qualify for the semifinals. A loss to England saw them get eliminated from the tournament. Dasun Shanaka will lead the side in the series with Chamika Karunaratne dropped from the side. Danushka Gunathilaka will also miss the series after SLC banned him over a sexual assault case.
Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. They also defeated Bangladesh in the group stage. However, losses to Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India saw them get eliminated from the tournament. They did not have a T20 World Cup campaign to remember as well as they lost their league games to bow out from the tournament.
Hasmatullah Shahidi will lead the side in the ODI series as Mohammad Nabi stepped down as captain of the side post the T20 World Cup.
