The SL vs AFG 1st ODI of the Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan 2023 series will be played on June 2, Friday at Hambantota in Sri Lanka. The three-match series will be played across five days from June 2-7. All the matches will be played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota.
Afghanistan have earned a direct qualification for the ODI World Cup later this year while Sri Lanka failed to finish in the top 8 rankings. Sri Lanka, Ireland, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Netherlands will now play in the qualifiers along with five Associate teams. Two teams from the qualifying tournament will then progress to the World Cup. India automatically qualified on account of being the tournament hosts.

Heading into this three-match ODI series, Sri Lanka are placed below Afghanistan in the ICC ODI rankings. The Afghan team is placed eighth while Sri Lanka is placed ninth. Sri Lanka lost an ODI series against New Zealand 2-0 heading into this ODI series.
The Lankans lost a T20I series 2-1 before winning a Test series against Sri Lanka 2-0. Sri Lanka have announced a 16-member squad with all their IPL players selected for the series. The team will be led by Dasun Shanaka with the likes of Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana all part of the squad. Dushmantha Chameera also makes a comeback after a long injury layoff.

Talking about Afghanistan, the side will be led by Hashmatullah Shahidi with all of their IPL superstars back in the national side as well. Noor Ahmad , Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Fazalhaq Farooqi are all part of the squad. Mujeeb ur Rahman is also in the squad completing the spin trio. Rashid Khan is out of the first two games with a lower back injury. He is expected to return for the final ODI on June 7.
Afghanistan last played an ODI series against Sri Lanka incidentally in November 2022. The series ended 101 with Afghanistan winning the first ODI by 60 runs and The Islanders squaring the series in the third ODI winning by four wickets. The second ODI was washed out due to rain.
