Sri Lanka are set to lock horns with Zimbabwe in the second ODI of the three-match series, scheduled to be held on Tuesday at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
Sri Lanka have begun their series on a positive note, having won the first ODI comfortably by 5 wickets. On a flat surface, which had little help for spinners, Zimbabwe batted well to score a par total of 296 runs in the first innings. T Kaitano and Chakabva gave the team a solid start to the innings as the duo added 80 runs for the opening wicket.
Debutant Kaitano scored a valuable 42-run knock off 50 deliveries, while Chakabva also made a significant contribution of 72 runs in 81 deliveries. Sean Williams, later, scored a heart-warming century to guide the team to a strong total. He played some lovely shots en-route to his 100-run knock off 87 deliveries.
As for Sri Lanka, Karunaratne and N Pradeep combined to pick 5 wickets between them but were also a little expensive during their spells. Theekshana gave 40 runs in his 10 overs but couldn’t pick a wicket.
Sri Lanka, too made a strong start, in pursuit of the total. Kusal Mendis Pathum Nissanka added 40 runs inside the first seven overs. Mendis looked good and played sumptuous drives but, unfortunately, couldn’t go on to score a big knock with the bat. Nissanka, however, set the tone for the chase with an important 75-run knock in 71 deliveries.
He stitched a crucial partnership with Dinesh Chandimal, who, yet again, showed why he is such a crucial member of Sri Lanka’s 50-over team.
He played a match-defining knock of 75 runs in 91 deliveries, including 4 fours and 1 six. Charith Asalanka, gave great support as he amassed 71 of 68 deliveries. Thanks to all those valuable knocks, Sri Lanka chased down the score in 48.3 overs.
