Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka has urged his team to bring in a throwdown specialist like the one Team India currently has in its management. The all-rounder believes that his team could learn how to play abroad with a throwdown coach.

Shanaka made the special request to the Lankan management team and called for a couple of specialists. India has one such person called Nuwan Sevenviratne, a.k.a Bawwa, who has been prepping the team to face extreme bounce and pace like the ones seen in tracks like Australia.

We have only three bowlers who deliver over 140 kmph. Since we cannot bring the bowlers from outside I requested for throw-down specialists. Bawwa is being used by India because of his pace and bounce which is very important when they play abroad,” Shanaka mentioned.

Bawwa was actually in Sri Lanka and had a few sessions with the team. His maximum speed in the nets reaches 175 kmph, but he was removed after the players complained that he was ‘too quick’. As a result, he joined India in 2018.

“This is important for a young team to develop their skill” – Dasun Shanaka

India’s overseas record has improved significantly since 2018. They defeated Australia in Australia back in 2018 and managed to replicate the performance recently. Although the entire credit can’t be given to one throwdown specialist, he has certainly managed to improve the team.

We need a team who gives throw downs continuously throughout the practice session. This is important for a young team to develop their skill.

If the young players can get a training like that during their first one and two years that experience could be used throughout their career whether it would be five years or ten years,” Shanaka added.

Sri Lanka is currently engaged in a white-ball series against South Africa at home.
