Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal is all set to miss competitive cricket for two months, owing to a knee injury. Tamim Iqbal has been one of the most integral members of the national team since his debut in 2007 and is a prolific run-getter for Bangladesh across formats. The southpaw’s absence would be a blow for Bangladesh as they start their build-up for the T20 World Cup.

Tamim Iqbal played the first two ODIs against Zimbabwe in Bangladesh’s ongoing tour and is currently featuring in the third as well. However, the veteran has not accumulated any significant scores, notching up 0 and 20 in the first two matches. Hence, before returning home before the three T20Is, Iqbal would want to finish on a high.

Tamim Iqbal, who picked up the injury against Sri Lanka in April, will return home with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam after the ODI series, as confirmed by chief selector Minhajul Abedin. Abdein also revealed that Tamim has to rest for six to eight weeks; hence, he would not play against Australia in August and New Zealand in September- both at home. However, Iqbal would feature against England in October.

“Tamim will return home alongside Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam from the ODI side. Tamim has been advised to rest for six to eight weeks. He won’t be able to play against Australia in August and New Zealand in September at home, but he might play against England in October. We have asked Rubel Hossain, Mohammad Mithun and Mosaddek Hossain to stay back with the T20I side as part of our contingency plan for the Australia series.” Abedin said as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.

Bangladesh Chief selector Minhajul Abedin further noted that they wish to have as many players in the bio-bubble ahead of the home series against Australia as calling candidates outside of it would be a problem.

“We have to keep players in quarantine for ten days ahead of the Australia series bio-bubble. We want to have as many options as possible as we won’t be able to call up players from outside the bio-bubble,” he added.
