The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling over hosting South Africa and New Zealand for T20 internationals ahead of the T20 World Cup which is scheduled in India itself.

The mega-event is slated for the months of October and November, and there are no T20 matches – barring the Asia Cup which is not confirmed yet – for Virat Kohli’s side after the ongoing T20I series against England.

Post the IPL 2021, India will travel to England to participate in the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in June; the squad is expected to remain in England as, in August, they will take on Joe Root’s team for a 5-match Test series.

Since India qualified for the WTC final, the Asia Cup, which was also earlier slated for June in Sri Lanka in the T20 format, is likely to get postponed.

Team India to host South Africa, New Zealand to prepare for the T20 World Cup

According to a report in the TOI, the BCCI is looking for ways to host a couple of short-format series against the Proteas and the Kiwis which will aid Virat Kohli and management to find the balance and combination of their eleven, which they seem to be struggling at against England, right before the T20 World Cup.

“South Africa and New Zealand are scheduled to come to India to play a couple of T20I series before the World Cup. The modalities are to be finalized. The board is aware that the team needs to be in touch with the format before the Cup starts,” a senior BCCI official told TOI.

South Africa’s last T20I series in India was a couple of years ago, the series ended in a 1-1 draw; Kane Williamson’s side lost to the Men in Blue 2-1 when they toured the subcontinent giants in 2017.

Speaking of the India-England T20I series, the visitors lead by 2-1 with the fourth game slated for Thursday.
