Elite off-spinner Nathan Lyon has highlighted the importance of Australia’s upcoming tour of India, stating that the visitors will be fully prepared, knowing that a positive outcome will catapult them to the World Test Championship final in 2023 if they win.

The Ashes has traditionally been recognized as one of, if not the biggest, cricket rivalries in the world. Each Australian cricketer wants to wear the Baggy Green and play in the Ashes, but off-spinner Nathan Lyon feels the ‘Border-Gavaskar’ series has become as significant to Australian cricketers as the Ashes.

For the first time on Indian soil since 2017, Australia will tour India later this year for a Test series, and the four-match series, as per Nathan Lyon, will be crucial because Australia has given oneself a chance of reaching the World Test Championship final after barely avoiding out on the title match in the previous edition.

Following a hard-fought 1-0 series triumph in Pakistan last month, Australia leads the subcontinent battle 1-0. Under the leadership of Pat Cummins, Australia showed grit and courage on their first visit to Pakistan in over two decades, winning the last Test in Lahore on fields unfamiliar to Australian players.

“It’s enormous.” According to the ICC, Lyon told Code Sports, “It’s becoming quite similar to an Ashes series as the ultimate series for an Australian cricketer.”

“With the Test Championship on the line, this series will be considerably more crucial and perhaps a greater struggle.”

“I believe the biggest one is going to be executing the basics, not getting too far ahead of ourselves, and appreciating the challenge.”

Lyon thinks that instead of hiding behind the subcontinental threat, Australia is ready to face it head-on.

“It’s pointless to hide behind it,” Lyon continued. “Going out there and performing exceptionally well is one task we want to be proud of. This is a huge challenge, and to be honest, it’s a lot of fun.”

Australia has not won a Test series, and Pat Cummins’ men are under pressure after the global beaters of earlier decades were humiliated not once, but twice in their very own home by India.
