Premier Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is undoubtedly one of the best Test bowlers in the world and many believe that he is the one who can go past Muttiah Muralitharan’s tally of 800 wickets in the purest format of the game. However, Ashwin has said that the goal of 800 Test Wickets is far from his reach.

Ashwin recently went past Harbhajan Singh to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in the longest format of the game and currently he has 427 wickets in his bag in 81 Tests. Soon Ashwin is expected to surpass legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev to become India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests and the only Indian above Ashwin in the list will be Anil Kumble who has picked 619 Test wickets.

Overall the highest wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket is Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan who picked 800 Test wickets in his career.

Earlier, while talking about Ashwin, the Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan has said that “Ashwin has a chance” to reach the 800 wickets tally.

Ashwin has a chance because he is a great bowler. Other than that, I don’t think any younger bowler coming in will go to 800. Maybe Nathan Lyon is not good enough to reach it. He is close to 400 but he has had to play many, many matches to get there,” Muralitharan had said, as quoted by Telegraph.

Firstly, I Thank Murali Anna (Muttiah Muralitharan) For Such A Statement – Ravichandran Ashwin

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin reacted to Muralitharan’s statement through the fan’s question and stated:

Firstly, I thank Murali Anna (Muttiah Muralitharan) for such a statement. He has mentioned it to me as well a few times. Once when I was injured he called me up and said listen, I too had a similar injury, so take care of yourself. If you don’t take care of it immediately with full attention, you might find it recurring. So we’ve had a good connect; he is a really nice human being.”

Ravichandran Ashwin further added that the fans are hoping that he reach the 800 wickets mark but it’s ” too far” and he will try to take one step at a time.

“So if he has said so, I am really thankful, but the goal of 800 is so far from reach. I know all of you have this hope that I do reach that mark, but it is too far. Let’s try to take it one step at a time, one wicket at a time and that is how I am looking at things,” he further stated.
