Serious concerns have been raised over Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) lavish spending, including sending its officials by the busload to watch matches. Following a six-member committee’s investigation into game-related incidents at the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia, the organization’s management may be dissolved in the coming weeks.

Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe received the report prepared by the six-member committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena. The committee’s report and supporting documentation are included in the recommendations of both sections of the report. Sports Ministry Secretary K. Mahesan also received a copy of the study.

The Committee advised the Sports Minister to use his powers under the Sports Law and the rules made thereunder to suspend, cancel, or reenergize SLC’s affiliation with the Ministry due to suspected financial misappropriation.

The investigators recommended the minister take the board’s documents to prevent the loss of evidence and conduct an independent audit of the suspected expenditure.

Sri Lankan cricket has come under intense scrutiny ever since Arjuna Ranatunga assumed the leadership of the National Sports Council (NSC), the main advisory body to the Sports Minister, last year. Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe promised to respond appropriately after examining the report.

The SLC has described the report as being done with “ulterior motives by distorting the facts,” but is coordinating closely with its legal staff to prepare a response in the event of its cancellation.

“We will be compelled to take legal action to protect the good name of the institution against the purported findings,” said SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva. De Silva was among those the committee interviewed to prepare the report.
