Former cricketer Madan Lal spoke about the weakness in Indian batter, Shreyas Iyer’s batting that might set him back if he ends up on the plane to Australia for the T20 World Cup later this year.

Iyer’s inability to deal with the short ball was exposed by Umran Malik in the IPL 2022 season. The trend has continued since then and the bowlers began resorting to the short-length deliveries to trouble the right-hander.

In international cricket, if you have a weakness, oppositions will surely go after it (Iyer’s short-ball weakness). Forget that they won’t. Now he has to sort out himself, has to find out a way.”

Even if he scores a 100, they (Australians) will clap, but they won’t spare you. There is no mercy here. They will keep bowling short to him. With the kind of technology that exists, any team keeps a strong track of the opposition,” Lal said on Sports Tak.

“The one area of his game Shreyas Iyer needs to improve is facing the fast bowlers” – Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan also took note of the same issue, implying Iyer is a batter who is quite comfortable against the slow bowlers but ends up having issues dealing with the pacers.

Yes obviously, he has struggled against pace, not only in this series but in quite a few matches (before that). Even in the IPL, we have seen that when it comes to fast bowlers who are bowling 140-plus, he has struggled a little. His strike rate has also gone down.”

He likes to play against spinners and if you are bowling less than 140 kph, he is very much comfortable. But the one area of his game he needs to improve is facing the fast bowlers, especially when the ball comes close to his shoulders,” Pathan noted.
