Former England skipper-turned commentator, Nasser Hussain, believes that there is more to it than just the failed drug test two summers ago that has made swashbuckling opener Alex Hales ‘undetectable in the current England set-up.

England Cricket Team were rocked with Covid outbreak in their camp on Wednesday after seven members of their squad- including three players- tested positive for the Wuhan virus.

The squad was immediately forced into isolation with the ECB announcing that a fresh squad will be picked for the Pakistan ODI series.

With the prospect of a fresh squat getting an opportunity, one assumed that Alex Hales will finally get an opportunity to represent the English team after a two-year hiatus.

That wasn’t the case though as Hales was once again ignored by the think-tank.

Alex Hales hasn’t played for England after he failed a drug test leading into the 2019 World Cup.

Hales, who had been picked in the primary World Cup squad, was eventually replaced by James Vince as captain Eoin Morgan terming the openers misdemeanor as a massive breach of trust.

Since then, Hales has traveled around the world and scored heavily in T20 leagues and his performance haven’t been deemed good enough to merit a recall.

“The one glaring absentee from this new-look England squad is Alex Hales. All I can say is that there must be something else at play here — because his non-selection cannot just be about those failed drugs tests a couple of years ago,” wrote Nasser Hussain in the Daily Mail.

Hussain added that we have seen in the past that people forgive, forget and move on unlike what has happened in this case. Hence, he suspects that there must be some other reasons behind Hales’ exile.

“As we have seen with other recent indiscretions, people forgive, forget and move on. So there must be some other reason those involved with the team hierarchy do not want him back,” wrote Hussain.

The former England captain reckoned that the present regime has effectively shut the door on Hales, rendering him “unselectable”

“To use one of their terms, he is now ‘unselectable’ and you must think that under this present regime, the door is firmly closed on him,” wrote Nasser Hussain.

Hussain signed off by stating that it is real shame that Hales is no longer playing for England given the fact that he is one of the best white-ball talents of the current era.

“From a cricketing point of view — and that is all I can comment on because I have never shared a dressing room with him, nor do I know him — that is a real shame because he is an incredible white-ball batting talent,” Hussain added.

“But, as I say, there must be something else behind the scenes because these are sensible men in charge who will not have taken such decisions lightly,” he wrote.
