On Saturday (17th April) night, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma created a history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he moved on top in the list of most IPL sixes as an Indian batsman after dethroning former Indian captain MS Dhoni.

On this ninth day of the IPL 2021, the record five-time IPL winners and the defending champions Mumbai Indians were playing against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) at MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk, Chennai) where MI skipper Rohit Sharma chose to bat first after winning the toss.

Rohit Sharma hit two sixes against SRH

The Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma scored 32 runs off 25 balls before Vijay Shankar dismissed him in the seventh over. During that innings, Rohit hit two four and two sixes.

During that innings, Rohit hit his first six of the match in the third over while he smashed Mujeeb Ur Rahman for a sixer over square leg. With that hit, Rohit equalled the record of most IPL sixes as an Indian batsman with MS Dhoni as both have then managed to hit 216 IPL sixes each.

Later, in the fourth over, Rohit hit another over-boundary to Bhuvneshwar Kumar over the midwicket which was his 217th sixes in IPL. After that another sixer, Rohit surpassed Dhoni and became the new leader in the list of most IPL sixes as an Indian batsman.

While MS Dhoni has hit 216 sixes in the IPL career, present Indian captain Virat Kohli is in the next place with 201 sixes in this tournament history.

However, Rohit Sharma is currently in the third position in the list of most sixes in IPL history. While the Caribbean star Chris Gayle just crossed the 350 sixes in his IPL career (351 sixes), South African AB de Villiers is in second place with 237 sixes in this tournament history.
