Justin Langer’s tenure as Australia head coach has been full of ups and downs, but he has been successful in giving out results on the field. However, reports have suggested that his contract, which expires in June 2022 might not be extended and former England coach Trevor Bayliss is the favorite to replace him.

Langer’s success has been mostly retaining the Ashes in 2019 in England, the maiden T20 World Cup victory, and winning the retaining the Ashes in the ongoing series at home over England with an unassailable lead of 3-0 with one more Test match to go. But it seems Langer’s hold on the dressing room has waned over the last year.

The former Australia opener-turned-coach’s relations with the players have been fickle for most time of his tenure with reports suggesting that his “intense and volatile” methods during India’s tour Down Under did not go well with the players. One of the biggest blobs on Langer’s tenure as Australia head coach has been losing two back-to-back Test series at home to India.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported last January that Langer’s style of coaching and “micro-management” left some players unhappy and they are “drained by his intensity and mood swings”. And while Langer has shown a desire to continue as head coach and seeking an extension to his contract, it may not happen.

Trevor Bayliss Favorite To Replace Justin Langer As Head Coach Of Australia Team

The Sydney Morning Herald had cited unnamed sources that said there was a rift between the coach and players following the home team’s 2-1 defeat in the Test series against India. Cricket Australia intervened and released a statement saying they backed the coach.

However, it seems, despite Langer’s desire to get his contract extended beyond June 2022, CA might be looking for a fresh candidate and former England coach Trevor Bayliss is the favorite to take over as head coach of the Kangaroos, as reported by the Guardian.

The more experienced Bayliss is assumed to be the ideal replacement given his reputation of giving players the freedom to make decisions. The 59-year-old is popular among the players from New South Wales for his successful stint as coach of the state team. He has known Cummins since his teenage years.

Bayliss guided England to an Ashes win in 2015 and the World Cup in 2019 in a four-year term. He has also successfully coached the Sri Lankan team and led Kolkata Knight Riders to their two IPL wins in 2012 and 2014.

Last June, when asked by the Sydney Morning Herald about his coaching roles at T20 franchise teams, Bayliss said: “The only full-time job I’d contemplate in the future if it came up would be the Australian job. But I’m very happy coaching two or three of the franchise teams around the world.”
