Twitter Hails Joe Root For His Imperious 21st Test Ton Against India In Nottingham
Updated - 07 Aug 2021, 11:53 PM
England Test skipper Joe Root, on Saturday, once again displayed just why he is one of the best batters of the modern era.
In what was a world-class display of batsmanship against a world-class bowling attack, Root smashed 21st Test ton and his first in three years on home soil to put England on top in the Nottingham Test.
Root had come into bat at a time when England had lost two quick wickets in the form of Rory Burns and Zak Crawley and they were still in the deficit.
However, the English captain picked off from where he had left in the first innings and launched a sustained counterattack on Indian bowlers.
The moment that he and all England fans had been waiting for finally came in the post Tea session when Root drove Shardul Thakur down the ground.
This is Joe Root’s 4th Test hundred in this calendar year and he has now scored 10 Test tons as an English skipper.
Root kick-started the year on an imperious note as he smashed a match-winning double hundred in Galle before backing it up with another daddy hundred.
He smashed another double hundred in Chennai to help England notch up a commanding win.
Root’s form tapered off in the next 5 Tests and, as a result, England lost each of those matches.
Root’s 109 have put England in a commanding position with them having a lead of 174.

A fluent hundred on a tricky pitch against a world class attack from England’s best batsman of the 21st century. Well in Joe Root.

This is the first time Root has scored 4 tons in a single year. His previous best of 3 he had managed 3 times from 2014-2016. Those 9 tons were accompanied by 23 50s.

Englishmen to make 4+ Test tons in a calendar year across the last decade:
Alastair Cook – 2012
Moeen Ali – 2016
Joe Root – 2021#ENGvIND— The CricViz Analyst (@cricvizanalyst) August 7, 2021
A wonderful hundred from Joe Root, one of his best. It's his 4th of the year, and England's 5th (which says it all really).

That is quite simply an outstanding century from Joe Root. An innings of the highest class. And the celebration tells you exactly what it means to him. Quality batting under intense pressure. Will it help England save or even WIN this Test Match…? #ENGvIND

First Test hundred for Joe Root at home since September 2018!
In the same period, he hit six tons abroad, three of which were double hundreds.#ENGvIND pic.twitter.com/qbYMZZTQUV

Perhaps the best I have seen Root play v the moving ball.
Whenever he had a chance, he was on the front foot.
