Indian opener KL Rahul has scored a brilliant century on the first day of the second Test against England at Lord’s. The opener looked in control throughout his innings and reached the landmark with a boundary off Mark Wood.

Having been sent into bat, India needed a good start under cloudy conditions that were tailor-made for the likes of James Anderson. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul started out watchfully, taking their time to settle in. Once the first bowling change was made, Rohit switched gears while Rahul kept hanging about.

The two put on a 100-run stand, with a majority of runs coming from Rohit’s willow. He was primed to score that elusive overseas ton but fell short by 17 runs. Anderson, the one who dismissed Rohit, accounted for Cheteshwar Pujara as well. Pujara, who has been going through a rough patch of late, was once again caught fending for a delivery outside off with minimal feet movement.

However, the unperturbed Rahul carried on from where he left in the first Test. Bringing out the sumptuous cover drives to over-pitched balls while respecting the good deliveries, Rahul chugged along and in the presence of Kohli. He brought up a well-deserved century in the 78th over when he carved away a wide delivery past gully for a boundary.

With this performance, he etched his name onto the Lord’s honors board, a feat that even the great Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara failed to do. He became the first Indian opener to score a century at Lord’s after 31 years. The previous one to do so was current head coach Ravi Shastri back in 1990.

Prior to the series, Rahul wasn’t even in contention for a spot in the playing XI. An injury gave him an opportunity which the Karnataka batsman managed to grab with both hands.

Following his century, Twitter was in awe of the 29-year-old’s classy knock. Some even went on to say this innings might well be the redemption arc in Rahul’s Test career.
