Former India National Cricket Team batter Sanjay Manjrekar showered praise on the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli, who has registered 70 international centuries to his name, for embracing India’s new attacking approach with the bat in T20Is despite going through a rough patch.

Star batter Virat Kohli, who is going through a lengthy lean patch, last scored a ton in 2019 and he has been struggling to make good contributions with the bat in the past few months.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, he scored 341 runs at an average of 22.73 and a strike rate of 115.98, including two half-centuries. Also, in the recent all-format tour of England, Kohli registered scores of 11 & 20 in the Edgbaston Test, 1 and 11 in two T20Is, and 16 and 17 in two ODIs.

Kohli was rested for the entire West Indies tour, which consisted of a three-match ODI series and a five-match T20I series, and he has also been rested for the ODI tour of Zimbabwe. He will be next seen in action during the Asia Cup 2022, which is scheduled to be played from August 27 to September 11.

The 57-year-old said that Kohli needs to be given credit for his aggressive approach with the bat in T20Is. He added that Kohli desperately needed runs in England but he didn’t care about his wicket and backed India’s new philosophy.

“They should celebrate because the class is back. Virat Kohli has had some first-hand experience of this new approach of India in T20 cricket in England. So he has embraced that, not with great success, but he has embraced that. You have got to give credit to Virat Kohli,” Manjrekar told Sports18’s show ‘Sports Over the Top’.

“He didn’t care about whether he was getting runs or whether he was getting out because he desperately needed runs in England and he is looking for international runs but he still sort of backed up the Indian team’s new philosophy. He was trying to hit boundaries from ball number one,” he added.
