After returning from a successful tour of Australia, Washington Sundar has been kept busy as the off-spinner is nominated as the ‘District Election Icon’ by The Chennai Corporation ahead of the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the state of Tamil Nadu. The 21-year-old international cricketer is roped in by the District Election Office to attract the youth of Chennai and Tamil Nadu for participation and to vote in the elections.

Despite being occupied with the recently concluded Australia tour and upcoming England series, Sundar readily obliged when asked for his participation and support in this mammoth campaign. The elections are expected to be held in May 2021 for 234 seats in Tamil Nadu. According to the ECI, 62.6 million people are eligible to vote from Tamil Nadu.

“Although he (Sundar) must have a lot on his plate after his return from Australia, he immediately agreed to get on board when we approached him for the initiative. We wanted someone who can connect with the youth in the city and we immediately knew he would fit the bill,” said Meghanath Reddy, Deputy Commissioner, Chennai Corporation.

The hashtag #IthuNammaInnings will be used for its social media campaign with the RCB spinner. The city corporation will also receive a special award for best electoral practices on Republic Day. They have recently launched a digital campaign with college students in the city through its ‘OPEN’ (Online Participation of Electoral Networks) initiative.

Washington Sundar selected for the England Test series after an impressive show in Brisbane

It speaks a lot of the trust the Indian team management had in the skills and temperament of Washington Sundar, who is a white-ball specialist, that he was picked over Kuldeep Yadav in Brisbane. After injuries to Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in Sydney, Sundar was given his debut Test cap for India in the Brisbane Test – he was selected over Kuldeep Yadav, who was already in the squad, for his superior batting skills over the chinaman.
