Washington Sundar has been receiving praise from all over for his stunning display with the bat on day three of the ongoing fourth Test between India and Australia in Brisbane. Playing his maiden Test, the left-handed batsman joined Rishabh Pant in the middle when India were reduced to 161 for 5. Minutes later, Rishabh Pant departed too as India found themselves reeling at 186 for 5 in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 369.

A big lead for Australia was looking likely after India lost all of their recognised batsmen for less than 200 runs. However, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur sprung a huge surprise by scoring impressive fifties. They negated the second new ball with ease too and mixed caution with aggression to help India post 336.

Thakur scored 67 while Washington Sundar scored 62. Washington, who had earlier picked up three wickets in the game, played some classy shots all around the wicket with his knock being studded with 7 sixes and no-look six off Nathan Lyon.

But while Washington Sundar has delighted everyone with his knock, his father M Sundar is disappointed with him. The reason behind his disappointment is the failure of his son to score a century. While the southpaw’s batting prowess has surprised the world, his father knows his son is a very capable top-order batsman although he has been picked in the team only for the lower middle-order.

“I am disappointed he did not get a 100. When Siraj came, he should have hit fours and sixes. He is capable of that. He should have gone for sixes. He could have gone for pulls and big hits. Perhaps, he thought of trying to come close to Australia’s total as the lead was very less,” M Sundar told IANS from Chennai.

“I speak to him in Australia every day. I told him last evening whenever you get a chance, get a big score. He said, ‘sure I will’,” he added.

Sundar senior further pointed out that his son is a natural opener and has scored heavily against the new ball. Perhaps that is the reason why he did not have any trouble facing the second new ball against the likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

“He is a natural opening batsman, and has scored a lot of runs against the new ball. In Chennai League, he is the youngest player to score a hundred in first division league. At the age of 14, he got a century while opening,” said Sundar.
