England skipper Joe Root, on Monday, surprised English fan Rob Lewis once again by giving him a phone call after the conclusion of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. A web designer, Lewis arrived in Sri Lanka to cheer for the visitors way back in March when the pandemic was yet to put a halt to action around the world. England had arrived in Sri Lanka too and had started their preparation for the two-Test series before it was postponed in the wake of the outbreak.
But while the English team returned home, Lewis decided to stay back and hoped that he will be there when his team arrives in the near future. Ten months later, England finally arrived and Lewis was there, the only English supporter at the Dutch Fort in Galle, the venue for the ongoing first Test match between the two countries.
On day one of the Test, he was not allowed to see the game from the fort as he was asked to remove himself (and the banners he had set up) from the UNESCO world heritage site. But later, the authorities decided to give him the green light to cheer for his team from the famous spot. And later on the third day of the Test, he received a pleasant surprise from Joe Root when the England skipper reached his double century.
When Joe Root raised his bat to celebrate his double century, he made a point of acknowledging Lewis by waving his bat towards him. And on Monday, the England batting mainstay gave Lewis another pleasant surprise by giving him a call. Soon after England thrashed the hosts by seven wickets to take the lead in the two-match series, the English team-management arranged a phone call between Joe Root and Lewis where the skipper expressed his gratitude on behalf of the whole English squad.
“It was nice to see you finally up on the Fort. Mate, it’s an absolute pleasure. That’s why I wanted to come over on behalf of all the lads. We really appreciate your support. It’s an incredible story and journey that you’ve been on over the last year or so. So more than anything I wanted to say a massive thank you. We really appreciate you being here and making the effort to come down and support us,” Joe Root told Lewis while on call.
“It’s a real pleasure for us to be able to enjoy this with you, so thank you very much, mate. It’s nice to be able to celebrate together a win here in Sri Lanka. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it. We’ve certainly enjoyed you being there supporting us signing your heart out as well, so look forward to more of it on Friday.
“We really appreciate it mate. It’s an amazing effort so thank you very much. Enjoy the rest of your day and get Randy Caddick on it and celebrate hard. Cheers Rob, thanks a lot mate,” he added.
The video of the conversation between the two was posted on Twitter by ECB.
