Indian skipper Virat Kohli expressed his displeasure on losing two points in the 2021-23 ICC World Test championship after failing to bowl the required overs in the first Test against England in Nottingham.

The first Test between England and India was unexpectedly drawn after rain played a spoiler on the final day of the first Test. India were poised to win the game as they needed 157 runs on the final day with the advantage of nine wickets in their hand, but the weather in the United Kingdom had some different plan.

India and England fined 40 % match fees for slow over-rate in the first Test

On Wednesday both India and England teams were fined 40 percent of their match fees and they have also been penalized two ICC World Test Championship points each for maintaining slow over-rates in the first match.

Chris Broad of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions after both sides were ruled to be two overs short of their targets after time allowances were taken into consideration.

Virat Kohli expressed disappointment over India being slapped two points in WTC

Kohli acknowledged the mistake while also showing some disappointment over losing two important points in the WTC cycle. The Indian skipper expects his team to keep up the pace with the game from the next match onwards.

“Yeah, that is right. As a team, we are not pleased that we lost those two points because of the slow over-rate. That factor is in our control, we made up a few overs and we were just short by two overs in the end,” Kohli said in a virtual press conference ahead of the second Test,” Virat Kohli said.

“Basically, we have to keep up with the pace of the game. You do not want to be too far behind in the game that you are not able to make up overs. As you said, points are very very crucial,” Virat Kohli added.

India will meet England for the second Test to be played at the Lord’s, London on Thursday (August 12).
