Former India batsman Ajay Jadeja has acknowledged that spending 7 hours on an ODI match is becoming too much, especially when outcomes are achieved in 3 hours in fast-paced T20 cricket.

The future of One-Day International cricket has been the subject of heated debate in recent days, with many former cricketers arguing that the 50-over format should be changed.

Earlier, Ravi Shastri, a former head coach of India, had urged that the ODI format’s current 50 overs per side be shortened to 40 overs. Such comments have recently been received in large numbers.

Some others even advocate for the International Cricket Council to fully abandon the ODI format. Some believe that more triangular and multi-team series should be created to revive the interest in one-day cricket.

‘ODI was expensive at one point in time’: Ajay Jadeja

Ajay Jadeja underlined what some of the other game specialists had previously emphasized. ODI cricket no longer has the same allure as it once had as T20 cricket continues to grow in popularity. Ajay Jadeja questioned why someone would want to spend seven hours (in ODI cricket) when results could be gotten in three hours (in T20 cricket).

“When ODI cricket first came on the scene, fewer Test matches were played since it was again more profitable for the players, broadcasters, and association. The involvement of broadcasters is essential. You will see that whichever receives more media attention becomes more well-known.”

“At one point, ODI was expensive. Then T20 arrived. Now that their rights have grown, ODIs are being played less frequently. But tests will always be there. In actuality, India is currently participating in more Test matches than they did 20–30 years ago. But ODI…7 ghante kiske paas he agar saare teen ghante me kaam chalta he,” he said while speaking on Fan code.

After all, it appears that the apex board has no plans to change the format of ODIs anytime soon. However, some format changes are possible after the 2023 ODI World Cup.
