World Test Championship Final Is Like A World Cup Only; You Reach By Defeating A Lot Of Good Teams: Umesh Yadav

India fast bowler Umesh Yadav is one of the few players to play only Test cricket, along with the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, and others. Umesh Yadav is one of the pacemen selected to tour England, where the Indian team has major assignments on after the other. The 33-year old agrees with his compatriots that the World Test Championship final is like a World Cup for them.

India start their three-month visit to England with the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton, beginning from the 18th of June. It will be followed by the five-match Test series against England, commencing in August and stretching till mid-September. India has not won a Test series in England since 2007 and experts have earmarked it as the best chance this year to break the drought.

Umesh Yadav backed the opinions of Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma, claiming that the World Test Championship is like a World Cup for players who play only Tests. The Vidharbha seamer remains uncertain of getting a chance to play white-ball cricket in the near future; thus, the WTC feels like a World Cup as they reached the final of the tournament by beating all the top teams.

“Yes, Ishant Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane are correct. As a player, when you are playing Test matches, the WTC is like a World Cup for you. It’s very uncertain if we are going to get to play ODIs in the near future. So, as a Test player, WTC is like a World Cup only. I also think the same. WTC final is different because you reach at that place by defeating a lot of good teams,” Yadav told ANI.

Umesh Yadav highlighted that the only fitness regime they are concentrating on is an individual’s physical and mental strongness. Yadav asserted they are trying to stay positive alongside looking forward to participating in the WTC final and are training individually to come together even better.

“The only preparations going on, during the lockdown, is of individual physical fitness and being strong mentally. We are all just trying to stay positive and looking forward to playing the World Test Championship final. We are all training individually now so that when we come together we are even better,” he added.
