Two Sri Lanka players, all-rounder Angelo Mathews and batsman Dimuth Karunaratne have written a strongly worded statement hitting back at legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for his recent comments regarding the duo.

The tussle between Sri Lankan cricket and the board regarding their annual contracts is privy to all. The players have refused the contracts offered by the board as they don’t concur with the board’s terms. Instead, for their recent England tour and the ongoing India series, they have signed temporary tour contracts.

Muralitharan had earlier stated that senior cricketers Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne are responsible for the ongoing dispute as they aren’t accepting the money offered by the board.

It is unfair and untrue that you state that: Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne write to Muralitharan

Now, Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne have replied back to the former spinner. They said that Muralitharan doesn’t know the entire issue, and their stand-off is not just because of money. The letter added that the legend has been fed incorrect information by people who “wish to create a rift between the players and the administration”.

“It is unfair and untrue that you state that the issue in the contracts was purely money,” the letter read. “We feel that you were not properly informed of the correct sequence of events, or was possibly given wrong information. Possibly by parties who wish to create a rift between the players and the administration and create disharmony,” it added as reported by Sports Tiger.

The issue has worsened so much that Angelo Mathews has reportedly informed SLC he is considering retirement, after turning down the tour contract for the series against India. He was also unhappy to be dropped from the limited-overs sides earlier in the year.

Although SLC said the all-rounder had pulled out of the India series due to “personal reasons”, the strife between them is laid bare for everyone to see.

Sri Lanka lost 3-0 and 2-0 in the T20I and ODI series respectively in England; they have also lost the first ODI against India.
