KL Rahul will be donning the captain’s hat for the first time in IPL. He will be leading the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) franchise in the upcoming season and there will be plenty of expectations from the Indian opener. More so, because KL Rahul has done well for KXIP in the recent past and has turned out to be a vital cog for the franchise.

Incidentally it will also be the first season for India spin legend Anil Kumble as the head coach of KXIP. Kumble said that he knows KL Rahul from his younger days and he knows the team well. He also added the KXIP has all the ingredients to make a solid team.

“It was very important to choose the captain [for the season]. I have known KL, seen him as a young kid growing up in Bengaluru, and as a cricketer. It’s his first season as skipper but he knows the team better than me. He has played here for two seasons. I think we have all the ingredients to build a solid team,” Kumble told Sportstar on Tuesday.

“I think KL will obviously take up keeping and then, we will take it from there,” Kumble, who served as a mentor to the Mumbai Indians from 2013 to 2015, added.

KL Rahul is also in the reckoning to become the first choice wicket-keeper for India after MS Dhoni called time on his international career. Rishabh Pant was touted to fill in the big boots of MS Dhoni across format. But as he failed to capitalise on the chances he was given with his poor shot selection and questionable glovework, it opened the doors for KL Rahul.

The Karnataka batsman, on the contrary, latched on to the opportunity and made the most of it. KL Rahul was tried to bat at different positions for Team India and he delivered. His glovework was also neat which came as an added bonus for the wicket-keeper batsman.

KL Rahul averages 45.65 in the shortest format.
