India head coach Ravi Shastri and his support staff’s tenure will come to an after the upcoming series against West Indies. In pursuit of a new set of support staffs, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited fresh applications. However, ad-hoc panel member Anshuman Gaekwad has almost confirmed the reappointment of Shastri as the head coach.

Shastri likely to continue: Gaekwad

Ravi Shastri, who joined the team in 2017 after Anil Kumble decided to step down as the head coach, has enjoyed great success with this Indian team. Under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Shastri, India have made it to the top of the Test rankings, while they occupied the second spot in the ODIs. Also, he is likely to have a good rapport with the players and is well-known for his man-management. Popular perceptions said that it is highly unlikely that BCCI will be eager to break the Shastri-Kohli combination ahead of the World T20 next year.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) confirmed the appointment of the three-member ad-hoc panel who will pick India’s head coach in the coming days. Anshuman Gaekwad, Kapil Dev and Shantha Rangaswamy complete the panel. Gaekwad felt there was no need to tinker with head coach Ravi Shastri’s position considering from result point of view.

“Speaking purely from the results perspective, he has done quite well. So, besides Ravi, all other positions [in the coaching and support staff] in my opinion are open depending on who is applying, their credentials and whether they meet the criteria of the BCCI,” Gaekwad said.

Anshuman Gaekwad, who was India’s coach from 1997-98 to 1999, said that other roles will be filled solely on what they can deliver for the team. It has been a trend these days that the head coach brings in his own set of support staffs; however, it is likely to break this time around.

“I had just a doctor for myself when I was coach. It is about competency along with a comfort zone. It [getting own support staff members] is basically an understanding to deliver. We will look at candidates purely on what they can deliver for this team,” Gaekwad continued.

In conclusion, Anshuman Gaekwad revealed that he will want to speak to a few players to get feedback on the current crop of support staffs if permitted by BCCI and CoA and ensured that they will pick the best person available.
