Australia convincingly won their first game in the 3-match ODI series against India. Though the entire Australian unit is happy with the result, they also got the concerning factor in the form of their skipper. After taking the captaincy role, Aaron Finch hardly put on a show for the country, especially, in the 50-over format of the game. Meanwhile, the vice-captain Alex Carey backs his skipper.

The vice-captain of Australia Alex Carey attended the press conference and quoted that Aaron Finch is working hard off the field. Further, he believes that a match-winning knock from his skipper is around the corner.

Aaron Finch leadership has been fantastic – Alex Carey

The vice-captain quoted that Australians are pretty pleased with the captaincy style of Aaron Finch. He believes that the team is pretty confident of him delivering the goods. Carey also revealed that Finch is quite motivating off the field.

Meanwhile, speaking of his own performance, Alex Carey added that he would like to see the Australian team winning the game and being a part of it, is his achievement.

“Finchy is a really proud Australian cricketer and he wants to bounce back and he wants to score big runs for us. The work he’s doing off the field, he’s so close to really nailing a match-winning inning. His leadership has been fantastic around the group. Having a guy that has made 11 ODI hundreds around our group and an experienced head out… he has been amazing off the field,” Carey said on Monday (January 14).

“As a cricket lover, I want to see Australia winning. And being a part of it, it means so much to us every game we play. So the series win would be a great result and a really big confidence booster. To continue to get better every game is probably our biggest process at the moment leading into that World Cup. Not thinking too far ahead, bringing it back to tomorrow night, but if we’re playing the cricket we know we’re good enough to play, the results will probably look after themselves,” he said.

Alex Carey reveals the reason behind Glenn Maxwell batting at number 7:

Further, Carey revealed the reason behind making Maxwell play at number 7 for the team. He added that Maxwell was given chances in the middle-order but was never utilised. Carey wants Maxwell to smack deliveries in the last few overs.

”To have Glenn Maxwell sitting in the sheds ready to go with two, three overs to go, I think that’s a pretty powerful position for our cricket side to be in. He has had lots of opportunities up the top of the order before… you could argue the point he should be batting higher. Personally… it’s pretty exciting to have that power hitting later in the innings. He doesn’t need too many balls to make a big impact,” he added.

Currently, Australians are leading the series with 1-0 in the 3-match ODI series. Meanwhile, it would be interesting to see how Aaron Finch would approach the game in 2nd ODI.
