Former Indian captain Anil Kumble backed Rohit Sharma saying he is matured enough as a player to handle any situation in the game. However, the right-hander had recently scored 40 runs in the practice game against CA XI. Moreover, Anil Kumble revealed that Rohit Sharma had missed out from Test format due to an injury.

Rohit Sharma is a productive contributor

He applauded the veteran batsman and also added Rohit had played an excellent inning against New Zealand previously in Kolkata. He scored 80 runs and helped India to win the game. After that, he had sustained an injury which ruled out of the game for 4-6 months.

“I think initially he missed out because of injury. He was batting really well, coming up really well against New Zealand. Rohit won the game in Kolkata, he got a brilliant 80 and then, unfortunately, he got injured against New Zealand in the one-day series and he was out of the game for almost 4-6 months,” Anil Kumble said to CricketNext.

Furthermore, Kumble said untimely injury cost Rohit his place in the red ball version. Subsequently, he was not a part of the Test team. Anil Kumble further added that Rohit Sharma would have surely been a part of the squad when Australia toured to India in 2017-18. The 48-year-old legend backed Sharma saying that there is no doubt Rohit is a matured player. He can well contribute to his team if he plays in the position where he is suitable.

“That probably cost him the opportunity to continue to be a part of Test cricket because otherwise, I’m sure he would’ve played against Australia when Australia toured India. I think he’s matured as a player; he’s at a place where he can contribute. If he can contribute, then we know how well he can contribute. So, that to me is the reason why Rohit Sharma is back,” Anil Kumble added.
