Not many had given Bangladesh even an outside chance of beating India in their own backyard. The odds were firmly stacked against the Tigers. They arrived in India without two of their greatest-ever players – Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal. While Shakib was recently banned by the ICC, Tamim pulled out of the tour to be with his pregnant wife.

Unsurprisingly, India were considered the firm favourites to win the first T20I. However, they were in for a major surprise as Bangladesh stunned them by seven wickets. The Tigers came up with clinical performance with both bat and ball to register their first-ever T20I win over India. The win against India came after eight consecutive defeats.

One of the biggest architects of the win was Mushfiqur Rahim – the most experienced player in the team. In the absence of Shakib and Tamim, the onus was on Rahim and the wicketkeeper-batsman duly delivered. He scored an unbeaten 60 take guide his team home. After the game. Rahim made it clear that no player in the team is indispensable.

Rahim said that Bangladesh have proved that they can without Shakib and Tamim. He further said that the underdogs tag helped the team play with a free mind.

“Shakib is a very big cricketer for us. We always miss him. Tamim is also a very big part. They have won many matches single-handedly. We always miss them. But it is also a sign that Bangladesh can win without them. Even without me or Riyad, I believe Bangladesh can perform,” said Rahim.

“We were underdogs when we came here. As we had nothing to lose we played with a free mind and that helped us play fearless cricket. But personally I think we can improve in a couple of areas. Because in the last two overs, we gave way some easy boundaries. So if we improve in those areas and play better, there is nothing impossible,” he added.
