Bangladesh Tour Of India 2019-20: First Test - Stats Review

The hosts India thrashed visiting side Bangladesh in the opening Test of the two-match Test series at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.

After winning the toss, the new Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque decided to bat first. However, the visitors were bundled out for just 150 runs in the first innings of this match. In reply, the hosts scored 493/6 before declaring securing a big first-innings lead of 343 runs.

India’s bowler backed the good work to bowl out the visiting side for 213 runs in their second innings to win this match by an innings and 130 runs. With this victory, the hosts have taken the 1-0 lead in this series with one to go which begins in Kolkata on November 22.

i) During the first innings of this match, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin completed his 250 Test wickets at home. He is the third Indian, sixth overall spinner and 10th overall bowler to claim 250 Test wickets at home. Among the Indian bowlers, Anil Kumble (350 Test wickets at home) and Harbhajan Singh (265 Test wickets at home) reached this milestone before Ashwin.

i) Playing his 42nd Test match at home, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin completed his 250 Test wickets at home. He is the joint-fastest bowler (according to the number of matches) to complete 250 Test wickets at home. Earlier, former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan completed his 250 home Test wickets in 42 home Test matches.

i) Playing his 12th Test innings, Mayank Agarwal scored his second double-century in Test career. He is the second-fastest batsman to hit the first two double-centuries in Test career. Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli is holding the fastest record in this list as he took only five innings to hit his first two double centuries in Test career.

ii) Opening batsman Mayank Agarwal scored 243 runs as India posted 493 runs before declaring in the first innings. It is the highest individual score in a Test innings by an opening batsman against Bangladesh. The previous record-holder was the former South African opener Graeme Smith who scored 232 runs at Chattogram in February 2008. Also, Mayank’s 243 runs knock was the second-highest individual score in a Test innings by an Indian batsman against Bangladesh. The record-holder is Sachin Tendulkar who scored 248 not out against Bangladesh during the Dhaka Test in December 2004.

iii) Mayank Agarwal struck eight sixes during the only innings he played in this match. After Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mayank became the second Indian batsman to hit eight sixes in a Test innings. During the Lucknow Test against Sri Lanka in January 1994, Sidhu had hit eight sixes in the first innings of that match.

Bangladesh – Bowling

i) During India’s first innings, the right-arm Bangladesh pacer Abu Jayed had the bowling figures of 25-3-108-4. It is the third-best bowling figures by a Bangladesh pacer against India in a Test innings. The top two records in this list are 5/71 by Shahadat Hossain (at Chattogram in January 2010) and 4/97 by Mashrafe Mortaza (at Chattogram in May 2007).

i) Under Virat Kohli‘s captaincy, it was the 10th Test victory for India by an innings. It is the new record in Indian cricket history as no other captain of this side has won these numbers of Test matches by an innings. MS Dhoni was the previous record-holder as his leadership provided nine Test victories by an innings.
