The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined Bangladesh Cricket team for slow over-rate offence during the first ODI against Sri Lanka at Colombo. The Tigers took four hours and seven minutes to complete their full quota of 50 overs. They fell two overs short of their target after the officials considered time allowances.

Lasith Malinga, one of the finest Sri Lankan bowlers to have played the game, once again gave the host the early breakthrough removing both the openers early on while Nuwan Pradeep dismissed Mohammad Mithun to have Bangladesh at 30 for three. Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman tried their best to revive the innings with individual fifties, but Sri Lankan bowlers chipped in with wickets at regular intervals before Lasith Malinga finished the proceedings to make his ending worth remembering.

Previously, batting first, an outstanding century from Kusal Perera with significant contributions from Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews helped Sri Lanka post 314 runs on the board. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne gave an early impetus before Perera took off the blocks. Perera, who had a mediocre World Cup, showed his class as he got supports from Mathews and Kusal Mendis to post a massive target on the board.

The Bangladesh bowlers were found guilty of slow-over rate and broke the ICC Code of Conduct. According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over that’s short of the target and the captain the double. As such, Bangladesh players were fined 20 per cent of their match fees; and their skipper Tamim Iqbal received 40 per cent sanction.
