Former India skipper Mohammed Azharuddin has been cleared to contest for his post of President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it pretty clear that it no longer holds any debars on him which prevents or will prevent him in the future from holding any position in the ICC or BCCI, or it’s any other affiliated associations.

His life ban has been lifted, and, as the Andhra Pradesh High Court didn’t challenge the BCCI which set its’s life ban on “procedural irregularities” ground, the BCCI won’t challenge the candidature of Azharuddin.

As per reports in the Indian Express, it is also learnt that all the pending dues of the former skipper will get cleared which includes monthly gratis and the one time benefit to former cricketers at the next Annual General Meeting.

The matter came into prominence especially after Prakash Jain, HCA’s ad-hoc committee chairman had asked for clarification that whether Azharuddin was eligible to contest in the elections last January. Adarsh Saxena who looks after the legal affairs of BCCI had earlier sent an email to BCCI CEO Rahul Johri on the legal position of the board which is in possession of the Indian Express.

“We understand that BCCI was contemplating filing a review petition against Andhra Pradesh High Court order sometime in March 2013. However, we understand that BCCI ultimately did not challenge the APHC order and that same has attained finality. We understand that BCCI has not responded to the letter.” Saxena’s email reads.

Saxena further wrote,

“In the light of the aforesaid, in our view, the BCCI order no longer debars Mr Azharuddin from holding any position in the ICC/BCCI or any of its affiliated associations as same has been set aside vide the APHC order. In view thereof, it is open Mr Azharuddin to participate in the ongoing election of the Hyderabad Cricket Association provided he is not otherwise disqualified in terms of the orders dated 2nd January 2017, and 3rd January 2017 read with the Lodha committee recommendations/directives.”
