BCCI, IPL Franchises Meet: Shifting Tournament Abroad Not An Option

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) top brass and the owners of the IPL franchises met at the national cricket board headquarters in Mumbai on Saturday to discuss about impact of novel coronavirus on the forthcoming season.

Six to seven options discussed: BCCI source

According to a report in PTI, if a BCCI source in the know of the meeting is to be believed, there were at least six to seven options discussed for the forthcoming season of the lucrative tournament.

“There were six to seven options discussed during the meeting between team owners and BCCI including a curtailed IPL,” a BCCI source said after the meeting.

There have been at least two deaths in India due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The widespread of the deadly virus has also resulted into the India vs South Africa ODI series being called-off.

The BCCI along with all the IPL franchises have reiterated BCCI’s stand of putting safety and well-being of fans, athletes and employees as a priority. The board will continue to monitor and work closely with Government of India, state governments and other state regulatory bodies to decide on the future course of action in the best interest of public health.

The BCCI and all its stakeholders are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved in our great sport and the nation.

The forthcoming season of the IPL has been deferred to April 15 from March 29. The BCCI have set a deadline of April 20 and if the tournament is not cleared off till then it might well be cancelled, keeping the health of people as the primary concern.

In case the tournament is called off, BCCI may incur a loss of Rs.10,000 crore, according to a report in Live Mint.
