The Board of Control for Cricket in India has revealed the reason to bring back MS Dhoni into the T20I squad. Dhoni had made the cut into the squad for the series against New Zealand. The former Indian skipper was dropped from the T20I series against the Windies and Australia. Dhoni isn’t in the best of forms and thus was overlooked for the shortest format of the game.

Meanwhile, there are only eight One Day Internationals before the coveted World Cup. Consequently, it is crucial that Dhoni gets the match practice under his belt. Hence, it makes sense to get back Dhoni into the T20I squad as he can get his confidence back.

This move makes sense.

However, the Indian selectors had earlier said Dhoni is not in their plans for the 2020 T20 World Cup. Subsequently, they had decided to drop him from the T20I squad.

“Since there are only eight ODIs (three against Australia and five against New Zealand), selectors want to give MS as much game time as possible (before the World Cup). Three T20Is means 11 international matches through the next one month,” a BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Hence, India will have the services of three wicketkeepers for the series against New Zealand as they will have Dhoni, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik.

Meanwhile, Dhoni is also not playing in the domestic circuit for Jharkhand. In fact, the runs in the middle can give a shot in the arm to the former skipper. He hasn’t been in the best of forms and it is crucial for him and the team, to get back his Midas Touch.

India’s squad for T20I series against New Zealand: Virat Kohli (Capt), Rohit Sharma (vc), KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav, Dhoni (WK), Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Khaleel Ahmed.
