Gautam Gambhir has always rated Yuvraj Singh very highly. In fact, time and again he has called Yuvraj the greatest match-winner to have played for India and his tribute to the just-retired cricketer once again proves it. Yuvraj, on Monday, announced his retirement from international cricket as well as Indian Premier League (IPL).

Yuvraj’s contribution to Indian cricket is unparalleled. It did not matter what the venue was or who the opposition was, Yuvraj lived up to the lofty expectations more often than not. But he will be best remembered for his starring displays in the the 2007 World T20 and the 2011 World Cup.

In the 2007 World T20, he hit Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over during India’s Super 8 match against England. Yuvraj didn’t stop there as he demolished an Australian attack in the semi-final by scoring 70 off just 30 balls. India had gone on to beat Pakistan to lift the trophy.

Four years later, he played a huge role in ending India’s 28-year-long wait for the biggest prize in world cricket – the Cricket World Cup. He scored 362 runs, including a century against the West Indies in Chennai, and picked up 15 wickets to bag the Man of the Tournament award. Yuvraj ended his career with an outstanding ODI record of 8701 runs — 22nd in the overall list, and seventh among Indians — at an average of 36.55 and 111 wickets.

Ever since Yuvraj announced his decision, the cricketing world is busy paying tribute to him. But Gautam Gambhir’s tribute stood out. The former India opener, who helped India win the World T20 and the World Cup along with Yuvraj, once again lauded Yuvraj as the best white-ball cricketer. Gambhir also said that the BCCI should retire jersey number 12 in a tribute to Yuvraj, writing:

“Congratulations Prince @YUVSTRONG12 on a wonderful career. You were the best ever white ball cricketer India had. @BCCI should retire Number 12 jersey in the tribute to your career. Wish I could bat like you Champion #Yuvrajsinghretires #ThankYouYuvraj #ThankYouYuvi”
