The first day-night Test in India at Eden Gardens between the home side and Bangladesh was a massive success. Although the match got over within two and a half days, it was an excellent spectacle for the spectators who turned out in huge number. In the wake of that, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to spread the pink-ball Test to all parts of the country in their recently concluded Annual General Meeting (AGM).

India notched a convincing innings win knocking off Bangladesh in grand style. The Indian fast bowlers dominated the proceedings claiming all the 19 wickets that fell while Virat Kohli registered his 27th Test century to lead the side with the bat. But what was more encouraging was the turn out for the Test match which has almost lost all its glamour. The historical Eden Garden was jam-packed, and people took interests in the traditional format of the game again.

BCCI to host more day-night Tests

After a possitive response, BCCI has planned to spread the pink-ball to other associations in their recent AGM. Although skipper Virat Kohli said that the day-night spectacle should be a one-off thing, the apex body has a plan to expand it in the near future.

“Yes, we got that passed in the governing body. Different associations will host the matches,” said BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

Furthermore, Sourav Ganguly also credited secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Dhumal for their cooperation to organise the day-night Test. The former India skipper also provided statistics acquired from Star Sports to show the change pink-ball Test has brought in viewership. BCCI President Ganguly is hopeful that the numbers will increase severely when India play against top-tier sides.

Credit should be given to (treasurer) Arun Dhumal and (secretary) Jay Shah also, and the Apex Council members for the pink-ball Test. Within three days (after assuming office) we had a meeting and told them this (day-night Test) has to happen. I got emails within a minute saying we’ll go ahead with it. And you saw the success. Star Sports sent us a feedback that the eyeballs were three times than it’s actually in a Test match. And that too India weren’t playing the strongest team in the world. Imagine playing against England, Australia and South Africa. I think it’s going to be remarkable,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, India will play their next Test match on home soil in January in 2021 when they host England in a five-match Test series. BCCI will look to host a day-night Test during the series.
