India suffered a shocking defeat to New Zealand by 18 runs at the Old Trafford in the semifinals to bow out of the ICC World Cup 2019. Since their ouster from the tournament, reports are coming out that there is a rift between skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to take up the issue in the upcoming review meeting.

BCCI to raise Kohli-Rohit rift issue in the review meeting

The Men in Blues failed to chase 240 runs set by New Zealand batting first at Manchester. Half-centuries from Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson had propelled New Zealand to 239 runs in rain-marred first innings. Chasing a modest total, Matt Henry and Trent Boult wrecked havoc with the new ball reducing India to five for three from where Virat Kohli & Co failed to recover. They staged a valiant comeback courtesy two outstanding partnership, but the dismissal of Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni after a 100-run stand was the final nail in the coffin.

Meanwhile, there have been a lot of talks about the areas where the team lacked and also how it was too reliant on the duo of skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Rohit Sharma when it came to scoring runs. Speaking to IANS, a BCCI official said that India too could look at the option of having the policy of split-captaincy.

“This would be the right time for Rohit to take over the mantle of the captaincy in the 50-over format. There has been immense support to the present captain and the management and it is time to plan ahead for the next World Cup and for that the existing ideas and plans need a fresh look. We all know some areas need a relook. Rohit would be the right man for the job,” the official said.

Furthermore, the biggest concern remains the rift between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as per the reports. The official said BCCI will sit with the captain and the coach along with CoA members to review the performances of the ICC World Cup 2019. He also said that the issue will be raised during the meeting.

“You are aware that Vinod Rai (CoA chief) has already mentioned that a review meeting will take place. This will have to be ascertained when the review takes place and it is important to get to the bottom of these rumours,” he concluded.
