The coin toss has been a part of international cricket since the very first Test match between England and Australia in 1877. However, Big Bash League (BBL) has introduced a new way of calling at the toss, as the skipper will call either say hills or flats. Meanwhile, BBL has gone one step ahead and decided that a bat flip will replace the coin toss for the forthcoming season, which begins on December 19th.

Meanwhile, a specially designed bat will get flipped for the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). Moreover, this practice is common in beach and backyard cricket, the exception being that the bat that will get flipped won’t be your average playing bat. It will be designed in such a manner that the bat ensures a 50-50 probability of ‘hill or a ‘flat.

In addition to, Chris Lynn, who recently got appointed the captain of Brisbane Heat, will be the first skipper to kickstart the trend on December 19. However, Cricket Australia’s head of the Big Bash League (BBL), Kim McConnie, spoke to abc.net and said,

“For me, it’s a great moment which reflects what BBL is about. I’ve got it from great authority at our [bat maker] Kookaburra friends that this is a tested and weighted bat to deliver that equity.”

Meanwhile, there has been a common concern that the skipper will call hills in this form of toss, as the bat has the natural tendency to rest with the flats side on the ground.

“You’d be surprised at the science that’s gone into this. It is a specially weighted bat to make sure that it is 50-50. I’ve got it from great authority at our [bat maker] Kookaburra friends that this is a tested and weighted bat to deliver that equity.” McConnie added.

Furthermore, the BBL 2018-9 will commence from December 19, and the first match will be played between Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers.
